6 injured at Brighton Heights funeral

Pittsburgh police say six people were shot outside a funeral in the Brighton Heights neighborhood on Friday. All six victims are believed to be in stable condition, police said. The shooting happened just after noon outside a funeral service for John James Hornezes, Jr., one of three killed in a shooting on the North Side of Pittsburgh on Oct. 15. This service was held at Destiny of Faith Church on Brighton Street. A source said someone drove past the church in a vehicle and fired shots. Police were unable to confirm where the shots were coming from, but said there was “most likely” more than one shooter. Police said they believe the shooting was targeted. Two men were arrested on the McKees Rocks Bridge in connection with the shooting, temporarily closing the bridge. A gun had been seen thrown from the bridge. Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey made an impassioned plea for peace in the city. “We have to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Gainey said. The mayor repeatedly called for an end to the violence, imploring people not to retaliate. Video of the service obtained by Action News 4 of Pittsburgh shows people inside the church responding to gunfire, screaming and taking cover.

Reverend Dr Brenda Gregg of Destiny of Faith Church called the shooting one of the most devastating days of her life. Gregg said the church will remain open.
