Kolkata: Veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mithun Chakraborty claimed on Wednesday that more than three dozen Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmakers were in touch with the saffron party.

Speaking to the media, he first asked, “Do you want to hear the latest news?”

“Right now, 38 TMC MPs have very good relations with us, 21 of whom are in direct contact with us,” Chakraborty said.

But it should be noted that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has 220 MPs in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly, while the BJP has only 70 legislators. The majority in the National Assembly is 148.

Reacting to his claims, TMC MP Santanu Sen said, “I heard that Mithun Chakraborty was admitted to hospital a few days ago. I think he was mentally ill and not physically. .. The problem is that he doesn’t know politics.”

Earlier in the day, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the central government of trying to defame the TMC government in the state.

Addressing a rally in Kolkata, she said: “They (the BJP) don’t have a job, their job is to take control of the state governments through 3-4 agencies. They have taken the Maharashtra, now Jharkhand, but Bengal defeated them.”

“It’s not easy to break Bengal because you have to fight the Royal Bengal Tiger first,” she claimed.

The TMC government is under fire for the recent arrest of its minister and top leader Partha Chatterjee in connection with a school recruitment scam.
