BREAKING NEWS: Laois Offaly Gardai investigates as man dies after van enters river

Gardaí is investigating all the circumstances following a fatal road accident that occurred on Sunday evening in Offaly.

A van entered the water around 5:30 p.m. at Banagher Marina. Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after and treated the driver of the van, a man in his 60s, at the scene. The man was taken to Ballinasloe Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

There were no other people in the vehicle and the scene is currently preserved to allow a technical examination to be carried out.

Gardaí appeals to all witnesses to this incident to come forward.

All road users who may have camera footage, including dash cam footage, and who were traveling in the area are urged to make such footage available to investigate Gardaí.

Offaly Search and Recovery also witnessed the scene and in a Facebook post said:

“Offaly Search and Recovery was contacted directly by the Gardai this evening. Our team members responded quickly and assisted in the recovery at the Banagher site. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and his family.”
