Top-ranked Challengers smash regular-season goalscoring record in 82-0 rout

There may not be a football team in the state at any level with a hotter hand than the undefeated Cascade Christian – and Friday night may have cemented its status as such.

Ranked first in the Class 3A Coaches Poll, Cascade Christian shattered the school’s regular season scoring record with an 82-0 Far West League win over Phoenix at Lithia & Driveway Fields.

“I’m happy with the way they performed from the start,” Challengers coach Jon Gettman said of his side. “I thought it was a good vibe and it was a fun night for them.”

The Challengers previously hit the 82-point mark in a 2009 playoff game, but the school’s regular-season record was set in 2017 in a 70-14 win over St. Mary’s.

On Friday, Cascade Christian’s offense racked up 498 total rushing yards with 12 touchdowns. His defense, meanwhile, forced a third shutout of the season, forcing five turnovers while limiting the Pirates to 24 total yards.

“The defense played very strong and physical football,” Gettman said. “It was really good to see.”

“They got very close to the ball carrier and when you have that ability to create pressure and play attacking football, good things happen.”

Sophomore running back Kameron Rague found the money three times in the first quarter for the Challengers (6-0, 6-0 FWL).

Less than 30 seconds after Tyler Almasy netted a 23-yard touchdown from Ashton Moody to give the Challengers a 7-0 lead on their first drive, Rague ran 30 yards for a rushing touchdown before shooting a score from 10 yards by senior quarterback Keith Reed.

With less than 10 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Rague rumbled for 41 yards on his third and final trip to the end zone.

“He’s just a dynamic player and a kid who has a chance to break it every time,” said Gettman of Rague, who replaced injured elder Triston Wallace well in the backfield.

Rague paced the Challengers with 121 yards on four carries while Reed was 4-for-5 for 128 yards and threw his second touchdown of the night – 51 yards to Luke Wilson – to put Cascade Christian up 62-0 with 27 seconds left to play before half-time. The outing was the first of the season for Reed, who started last year but suffered a pre-season injury.

Wilson led the Challengers in receiving with 81 yards on two catches while Cole Shields and Caleb Scaglione drove in for 50 rushing yards apiece. Shields also managed to get into the end zone on a 25-yard run in the first quarter.

Brody Sample had back-to-back scores for the Challengers in the second quarter. After a 16-yard touchdown run and a Challengers defensive save, Sample returned a Phoenix punt 53 yards into the end zone.

On the defensive end, Sample had two sacks and Moody added 1.5 sacks for the Challengers, who allowed just 22 points in six games.

The Pirates (0-6, 0-6), whose last victory was against McLoughlin/Griswold in a 2-6 campaign in 2019, were led by Jair Ramirez on the ground with 20 yards on nine carries.
