After the tech titans start the year at CES and MWC, it’s time for gamers to party. This usually happens at E3, but the last two years have upended their plans due to the ongoing pandemic, so we have to ask ourselves: will this year be the same? Can we expect a physical return of the event or a digital edition? Or will E3 2022 be cancelled? Here’s everything we know in terms of dates, times, locations, and rumors.
E3 2022: Dates
The most important thing you’re probably wondering is…when to buy tickets for E3 2022.
Normally we would say for mid-June. Previously, E3 took place over three days, between June 14 and June 16. In fact, ESA has adhered to this schedule for over a decade!
This year, however, the association has not released a clear timetable or dates. They were unusually vague. We suspect this is due to the spread of the COVID-19 omicron variant which, again, is keeping people on the edge of their seats and organizers on hold.
Note, the E3 2021 took place only online over four days, while the 2020 edition was canceled. However, last year publishers and developers like Nintendo, Ubisoft, Xbox and more took part in the online event showing that the industry is keen to reconnect with its audience and share news as they are hot.
E3 2022: schedule
It’s still early to have a clear schedule for E3. What we can tell you is to check out last year’s list. With the deals being relatively new, chances are these companies will be back at E3 this year.
We are looking for big names, such as…
- 24 Entertainment
- Gamer on PC
- Future Games
- bandai namco
- Interactive Take-Two
- mythical games
- freedom games
- Studio Yooreka
E3 2022: Announcements
While we don’t have a confirmed attendance or official announcements regarding game releases at E3 this year, we do have an idea of what you might see there.
For a, new Xbox games. Xbox Global Publishing is rumored to be working with established studios on new IPs.
nintendo could definitely enjoy the event. Although there was a Nintendo Direct this month, we’d be surprised to see them miss E3 2022.
One of the things they might announce? Breath of the Wild 2 – name and release date! As for Splaton 3, although it’s been revealed, Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date – it could be at E3.
There’s also been an exciting rumor about a sequel to Star Wars: Fallen Order. Word is Fallen Order 2 could be announced on this occasion. Given the success of the first game, we imagine players will be following this news feed very closely.
Square-Enix could actually deliver this summer. Players could finally check Final Fantasy XVIone of the most popular franchises to exist.
As we mentioned, Microsoft is expected to come up with a major rollout this year. The titles we imagine the company will unveil? star field and red fall. A gameplay would be welcome for both.
E3 2022: In person or digital?
While the ESA has kept mum on the dates for the event, they released a statement saying that E3 2022 will definitely not take place in person. The association has invoked pandemic concerns which are, as we all know, well founded.
It’s a loss of approximately 50,000 industry insiders and 15,000 fans who will leave the Los Angeles Convention Center empty in June.
Our best guess is that E3 will take place digitally like last year. In January, when the ESA announced the cancellation of the physical event, they added that “We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”
These details could mean another form of organization, i.e. a digital event. Fans will likely try to see it online even though it lacks the appeal of a face-to-face gaming convention.
E3 2022: How to watch online
If the ESA decides to return to the digital format, fans will have several viewing options.
On the one hand, it is likely that the E3 YouTube Channel will stream the whole thing. But you will also have the option to watch only certain publishers and their ads. In the past, these presentations were streamed live on YouTube and Twitch.
Of course, there are voices that say E3 won’t be happening at all this year. One such voice is from industry insider Jeff Grubb: “E3 has been canceled. Well, physically it was canceled; digitally, probably canceled as well.
But we say don’t give up hope just yet. Considering last year’s attendance and the benefits an online event gave to smaller publishers and indie games, ESA has no reason to stay away this year.
Especially since similar in-person gaming events are taking place in 2022. One of them is Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, which he made sure to tweet after the disheartening announcement from the ESA:
Another is the Game Developers Conference. GDC is scheduled to take place March 21-25 in physical format.
Valve wants to work with Xbox to bring Game Pass to Steam Deck
Nintendo Acquires Longtime Development Partner SRD
PS Plus games for March 2022 are Sonic Team Racing, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends and more!
