Gamescom 2022 returns with physical event alongside opening night live from Keighley

Geoff Keighley has reportedly signed a new contract with gamescom for its annual pre-show alongside the return of a physical event in August.

Gamescom is traditionally one of the biggest all-year gaming events in the world. We’ve seen the convention center in Cologne, Germany gather hundreds of thousands of attendees looking to see the latest games and news from publishers and developers. COVID-19 curtailed that show for a while and forced gamescom to go digital, relying on Geoff Keighley and his show Opening Night Live. Keighley’s ONL returns in 2022, but so does gamescom 2022 with the return of a physical event in August.

Gamescom has announced its physical/digital hybrid return via a Press release on March 10, 2022. According to the release, gamescom 2022 is set to return to the Koelnmesse trade and congress center in Cologne, Germany from August 24-28, 2022. The German Games Industry Association also announced an effort to make this year’s event greener, offsetting the carbon footprint by using a portion of event proceeds to support a wind power project in Brazil and a clean cookstove project in Nigeria. This is in addition to the option to support the 20,000 square kilometer gamescom forestry project near Bayreuth, Germany.

In addition to the physical return event at the Koelnmesse, Geoff Keighley announced via his twitter that it has signed a new deal with gamescom to produce this year’s iteration of Opening Night Live, which will take place ahead of gamescom 2022 on August 23, 2022. This will be part of the overall efforts to bring gamescom news and reveal to players around the world who cannot attend the event. In previous years, Keighley’s live opening night has been a major factor in keeping gamescom fun when there hasn’t been a physical event due to complications from the COVID pandemic. -19.

With gamescom and Opening Night Live returning next August, it looks like organizers are ready to bring back one of the world’s biggest gaming events in top form. Stay tuned as we continue to follow for more announcements and updates ahead of gamescom 2022.
