HBO Max adds new, cheaper subscription that includes ads

HBO Max today announced a new level of subscription that costs less but has advertisement.

The new ad-supported tier will cost $ 9.99 per month. The ad-free tier is $ 14.99.

HBO Max also said it offers a 15% discount to new and old subscribers if they prepay for a year. The cost for one year of the ad-supported tier will be $ 99.99 and ad-free $ 149.99. The price without the discount would be $ 119.88 and $ 179.99.

“Advertising is a proven way to lower the cost of great entertainment and reach larger audiences,” said Andy Forssell, executive vice president and general manager of HBO Max. “We’ve worked hard to create an elegant and tasteful ad experience that respects good storytelling for users who choose it, and which we are confident it will deliver to our ad partners as well. “

Both HBO Max subscription levels provide access to entertainment brands like HBO, Warner Bros., DC, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and more.

HBO Max said, “The ad-supported tier will not include the ability to download content for offline viewing, and the quality of the streaming video will be limited to 1080p. The Warner Bros. debuting in theaters and on HBO Max throughout 2021 are not included in the HBO Max ad-supported tier, but will become available on both tier options when the movies debut through the HBO service in the months after their theatrical releases as part of HBO’s release deal with Warner Bros.

The new level has a maximum of 4 minutes of ads per hour.
