Miner in detention after allegedly threatening to ‘shoot’ Florence high school / high school – Canon City Daily Record

A minor, who allegedly threatened to “shoot” at Florence high school, has been taken into custody for possession of a stolen firearm, according to Florence police chief Shane Prickett.

In a press release Tuesday night, Pricket said that as of 11 a.m. Tuesday, the Florence school’s resource manager received several reports from students that a young man threatened to shoot at the school.

Officials have placed the school on heightened alert. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the Cañon City Police Department were subsequently made aware of the existence of the 17-year-old suspect.

A Fremont County Sheriff’s Deputy located and attempted to contact the suspect in Cañon City. He was arrested after a brief foot chase and a stolen firearm was found in his possession.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Prickett said the Florence Police Department had received an additional threat to shoot the school.

After speaking with authorities, school officials decided to move the high school to distance learning for the last two days of school, Wednesday and Thursday.

Prickett said the investigation is still ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
