AAP gov’t betrayed governor and won’t attend Punjab Assembly session: BJP

The BJP on Wednesday slammed the Punjab government for bringing a motion of confidence to the state assembly and said its MPs would not show up in the chamber on Thursday as the ruling outfit ‘betrayed’ the governor and shuns discussions on burning issues.

Speaking to media here, Punjab BJP leader Ashwani Sharma said he and another party MP would not attend Thursday’s session.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had proposed the confidence motion on Tuesday, the opening day of the National Assembly session, which will run until October 3.

The session was convened after Governor Banwarilal Purohit gave his approval on Sunday, following days of wrangling between the Raj Bhavan and the AAP government over the holding of an assembly session.

Previously, the governor withdrew authorization to hold a special session on September 22 when the AAP government wanted to present a motion of confidence only.

Punjab BJP leader Sharma on Wednesday accused the AAP of “betraying and deceiving” the governor in bringing forward the confidence motion.

The ruling AAP had listed the issues of thatch burning, goods and services tax and electricity, but they did not address them in the House, Sharma said, adding that the ruling party had violated the Constitution by presenting the motion of confidence to the Assembly.

He said the opposition wanted to raise issues such as law and order, the plight of farmers, illegal sand mining and rain-damaged crops. No one had asked AAP to make the motion, he said.

“You (AAP) are running away from the problems in Punjab and you can’t face the people anymore,” Sharma said.
