Police: prime suspect in Butler Township. quadruple shooting stopped in Kansas

BUTLER TWP. – A man suspected of killing and shooting four people in a Butler Township neighborhood is now in custody following a nationwide search.

Police were dispatched to Hardwicke Place and Haverstraw Avenue just before noon Friday after reports of gunfire, Butler Township Police Chief John Porter said Friday afternoon. Police found several crime scenes and four people who had been shot. They were all pronounced dead at the scene, Porter said.

Our teams at the scene reported that investigators blocked off two houses on Hardwicke Place with police tape. A third house on Haverstraw Avenue was also blocked off and investigators were seen entering the house.

Police identified 39-year-old Stephen Marlow as the prime suspect and believed he had left the state.

Porter then identified the victims as Clyde Knox, 82, Eva Knox, 78, Sarah Anderson, 41, and Kayla Anderson, 15.

Kayla was a student at Vandalia-Butler High School.

Superintendent Robert O’Leary said the district mourns the loss of Kayla and described her as a friend to many, kind and a “ray of light”.

Pastors, youth ministers and therapists will be available for students who need them, O’Leary said.

The Butler Township Police Department was assisted in the nationwide search for Marlow by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Vandalia Police Department and neighboring states were alerted.

On Saturday, the FBI said a federal arrest warrant had been issued for Marlow after he was charged with unlawful theft to avoid prosecution. He also faced four counts of aggravated murder.

On Saturday night, Porter told the media that Marlow was arrested just before 10 p.m. by police in Lawrence, Kansas.

Porter said local authorities are making arrangements for shipments in the future.
