The teacher sticks a mask on the student’s face; school district says it was ‘unacceptable’

A Pennsylvania middle school teacher has sparked outrage after she was photographed taping a mask over a student’s face, prompting the North Penn School District to call her actions ‘inappropriate and unacceptable’ “.

The photo was posted Monday to a Facebook page for “North Penn Stronger Together,” the name of a slate of Republican candidates who lost school board elections in November, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The image showed a woman, described by the group as a Pennfield Middle School teacher, taping the top and side of a student’s mask in the classroom.

However, the circumstances leading to and following these actions are not known.

“Pro-mask or anti-mask, I hope we can all agree that sticking masks on children’s faces crosses the LINE. It was no joke for the child or the parents,” the group said in a Facebook post.

The district said in a statement that the image was taken in one of its classrooms last week and did not represent the values of the district.

“After an immediate investigation, it was determined that although the incident was isolated and no malice was intentional, the teacher’s actions were completely inappropriate and unacceptable, regardless of the context,” the statement read. .

The district said the matter was being discussed with the teacher, but did not say whether the staff member could be fired or furloughed.

“All staff and student matters are confidential and no further information can be provided,” the district said.

The district did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment on the incident.

District officials also addressed the controversy at a school board meeting Thursday night, where angry parents demanded answers.

“First of all, I would like to apologize on behalf of the district and the council of principals to the student involved and his family,” North Penn School Board President Tina Stoll said during the interview. the reunion, according to NBC. Philadelphia Cream.

Several parents raised questions about the treatment of students and demanded that the teacher involved be fired.

“I want to know – have there been other teachers taping masks to children?” a parent asked the board at the meeting.

“I think as parents and taxpayers we deserve to know how the situation is being handled because to date we have heard that the teacher – who is a specialist teacher – is not being arrested for child abuse. kids or fired,” another person told the meeting.

However, the pictured student’s mother is unhappy with the escalation of the incident. A statement from the mother was read at the meeting, the news station reported.

“Some people felt compelled to take matters into their own hands, including contacting local authorities and spreading this image of my son in various media outlets,” the statement read.

She added, “What’s happened since feels like a scene from my worst nightmare.”
