Tribe donates $15,000 for children’s dental care – Medford News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News

The Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation donated $15,000 to La Clinica’s Happy Smiles dental outreach program which provides basic dental care to students at local schools.

Children receive dental screenings, education, fluoride treatments, sealants to help prevent tooth decay, and dental care kits with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. They are referred to local dentists if screenings show they need more comprehensive care.

The Happy Smiles program serves 27 Jackson County schools, including elementary and middle schools in partnership with the Medford, Phoenix-Talent and Central Point school districts.

The dental care that La Clinica provides in schools reaches around 15,000 children each year, helping young people to have healthy teeth for life, the health care organization said.

Getting dental care at school helps reduce absences and prevent pain that can prevent children from concentrating and learning. It’s also convenient for parents and guardians, who can get their children’s basic dental care without having to miss work for appointments. Care is free for children from low-income households who do not have dental insurance, La Clinica said.

Since its inception in 2004, Happy Smiles has relied on community support to pay for its services in schools and other locations. Learn more about Happy Smiles at laclinicahealth.org/services/school-based/dental.
